Earlier this year, I marvelled at the silk escape maps which had been turned into beautiful underwear that was on display at the Imperial War Museum’s Fashion on the Ration exhibition. These maps were extremely practical – they didn’t fall apart in the rain and could be tucked up very small in a pocket – yet they also look so beautiful. After spotting a small piece in Time Out (I think!) about a man who was running a Kickstarter campaign to create silk scarves with modern maps of London, inspired by these WW2 maps, I decided I simply had to have one.
As you might imagine, the campaign was successful and I was extremely excited to receive my chosen blue scarf. When my Kickstarter reward arrived, I snapped some photos and shared them on Twitter, but it was a while until I worked out how I was going to style my scarf.
In the end, to showcase the fantastic print, I tied it around my hair with the long ends hanging over my shoulder (see right). Although it’s the blue colour way, there is also quite a bit of green on the map which opens up the options if you’re building an outfit around it. There is also a red/orange version if you fancy something a bit more vibrant. It’s quite a large scarf at 90cm x 90cm, so I haven’t yet worked out how to wrap it around my head the way I would do with an 70cm x 70cm scarf, but it’s made from silk chiffon so it doesn’t slide off of clean hair the way a shiny satin weave fabric does.
